The driver theory test is the first official step toward getting your Irish driving licence. Before you can apply for a learner permit, you need to sit and pass this computer-based exam. Here is everything you need to know.
What Is the Driver Theory Test?
The driver theory test is a computer-based multiple-choice exam set and administered by the Road Safety Authority (RSA). It tests your knowledge of road rules, road signs, vehicle safety, and responsible driving. You must pass it before you can apply for a learner permit.
The exam is booked through the official website at theorytest.ie.
Who Needs to Take It?
Anyone applying for their first learner permit in Ireland needs to pass the theory test first. This applies to:
- People applying for a car licence (Category B)
- Motorcyclists applying for a motorcycle learner permit
- People applying for truck or bus licences
The test category you sit depends on the type of vehicle licence you are applying for. Most learner drivers in Ireland will sit the Car or Bike category.
How Many Questions Are There?
The test for cars (Category B) contains 40 multiple-choice questions, drawn from a bank of over 700 questions. You have 45 minutes to complete the exam.
What Is the Pass Mark?
You need to answer 35 out of 40 questions correctly to pass — that is a score of 87.5%. You can get up to five questions wrong and still pass.
This is a high bar. The national pass rate sits at around 55%, which means roughly half of candidates fail on their first attempt. Most failures come down to insufficient preparation.
How Much Does It Cost?
The fee for the Category B (car) theory test is €45. If you fail, you can rebook and resit — there is no limit on the number of attempts.
How Long Is the Certificate Valid?
Once you pass, your theory test certificate is valid for two years. You must apply for your learner permit within that window. If you do not, the certificate expires and you will need to resit the exam and pay the fee again.

Note: From November 1, 2026, candidates must be at least 15 years old on the date of their test.
What Topics Are Covered?
The questions cover:
- Road rules and traffic laws — right of way, speed limits, traffic signs, road markings
- Driving safely — observation, awareness, anticipating other road users
- Vehicle controls — engine checks, tyres, lights, brakes
- Environmental considerations — fuel efficiency, emissions, responsible driving
- Specific situations — motorways, bad weather, breakdowns, emergencies
The questions reflect the Rules of the Road, which is the official Irish guide to driving law and road safety.
How to Study for the Theory Test
Start at least two to four weeks before your test date. Here is a practical approach:
Use official practice questions. The RSA produces an official practice question bank. You can access it through the RSA app or through approved practice sites. Working through as many questions as possible is the most effective preparation.
Read the Rules of the Road. The official book covers everything the exam tests. It is available from bookshops for around €20.
Do not try to memorise individual answers. The question bank is large. Aim to understand the reasoning behind each rule — that knowledge will carry you through unfamiliar questions.
Aim to consistently score 38 or 39 in practice before booking your real test. A comfortable margin gives you room on the day.
On the Day of the Test
- Bring a valid photo ID (passport or driving licence — not a learner permit)
- Arrive a few minutes early to check in
- The test is conducted on a computer with a touch screen
- You can flag questions and return to them before submitting
- Results are given immediately at the test centre
If you pass, you receive a Certificate of Competency on the day. Hold on to this — you will need it when applying for your learner permit.
What Happens After You Pass?
Once you have your theory test certificate, you can apply for your learner permit through the NDLS. You will need to hold your learner permit for at least six months before you are eligible to sit the practical driving test.
This is the time to start your driving lessons. If you are applying for a Category B (car) licence, you are required to complete Essential Driver Training (EDT) — 12 mandatory lessons with an RSA-approved driving instructor.
